Checklist
Irrigation readiness checklist for gardens, estates and farms.
A site that is ready gets a better design, faster, whether it is a hotel garden, an estate or a vegetable farm. Tick what you have, and note what you do not.
The land
- You know the area you will irrigate, and roughly its shape
- You know which way the land slopes
- You have a sketch, a survey, a landscape plan or a satellite screenshot of the site
- You know where the paths, driveways and buildings are, and any pipes or cables already in the ground
- Access for vehicles and materials is clear
The water
- You have a water source, or you know where one will come from
- You know roughly how much it gives, and whether it holds through the dry season
- You have had the water looked at for sand, silt or iron
The power and the pump
- You know what powers your pump now
- You know the pump's make and size, if you have one
- You know where a controller can be mounted, with power close by
- You have thought about backup if the power fails
What you plant
- For a garden: you know which areas are lawn, beds, hedges or trees, or you have a planting plan
- For a farm: you know which crop or crops, such as tomato, onion or pepper, and how much of each
- For a farm: you know your row spacing, or the spacing you plan
- You know your planting date, or the date the site must be watered from
The people
- Someone will look after the system: a gardener, a facilities team or a farm hand
- The person who decides is part of the conversation
